Now that the weather is finally getting warmer, many Virginian boaters are getting their watercraft out of storage and planning the first trip of the year. While many will be content to revisit old and familiar spots, others will want something new. If you belong to the latter category, take a look at some of Poplar Pointe Marine’s top Virginia boating spots.

Philpott Lake

A forty-minute drive northwest of Martinsville will bring you to Philpott Lake. With 3,000 acres of beautiful scenery to explore, there is no end to the hiking and birdwatching opportunities. Of course, boaters will be more interested in the more than 100 miles of shoreline. With six beaches and several places to launch your boat, it is one of Virginia’s best boating areas. It is also the site of regular events, so check the calendar before you visit to see if anything interests you.

Lake Maury

If you are looking for a lake that is easy to access, head east to Lake Maury. Though this lake does have some restrictions on what kinds of boats you can use on it, it also has the advantage of being owned by the Mariners’ Museum. As one of North America’s largest maritime museums, it offers all kinds of unique educational opportunities. Of course, you are free to simply enjoy the lake if you so choose, provided you comply with safety restrictions.

Lake Drummond

If you aren’t interested in the museum or your boat isn’t allowed on Lake Maury, nearby Lake Drummond is a great alternative. This lake forms the centerpiece of the Great Dismal Swamp and sports a beautiful round shape. Many theories exist that attempt to explain how Lake Drummond acquired such a unique shape, such as underground peat burning or even a meteorite, but two things are certain. The pH levels make it the perfect place to find bowfin, longnose gar, and crappie, and the haunting atmosphere makes it one of the most interesting places to boat in Virginia.

Lake Anna

For a more family-oriented waterway, head north to Lake Anna. It offers warm beaches, lighthouses, regular events, and eateries in addition to the usual activities like boating and fishing. This makes it great for those who want to enjoy the water but feel they may need the occasional break.
